When pandemic related shut downs started in the U.S. in March 2020, I felt so helpless when I drove through my city and saw so many people who had lost their jobs with no notice, standing on street corners with cardboard signs.
Giving to local charities is something I was already doing, but I wanted to do something a bit more hands on. Having to limit contact with other humans, the only thing I could think to do was make up 'care bags' to give away. I put bottled water, granola bars, tuna packs, crackers, socks, lip balm, face masks, travel size bottles of shampoo or body wash, a dollar bill, etc. in each bag. It felt GREAT to actually have something to give people and it usually led to a quick conversation with folks too.
I love this, Steph. Especially the conversation part. I just heard an amazing radio interview on homelessness in Canada and how it's a solvable issue. The Canadian expert said mass homelessness here really only began in the '90s and a Finnish expert talked about how they are combating homelessness by preventing it from happening in the first place. Going to try to find a link for next week's newsletter. It was everything I needed to hear! Take care :)
